Hibernation is a useful power option but its
associated file, Hiberfil.sys can have a tendency to
take up a considerable amount of space. On a machine
with 2 Gigabytes of Memory, for example, the
Hiberfil.sys file will expand to a full 2GB. The
more memory available, the larger the file.
For the those that want to disable hibernation
the procedure is simple.
Disable
- Click Start followed by All Programs and
then Accessories.
- On the Accessories menu Right Click on the
Command Prompt.
- From the drop down menu, Click on the Run As
Administrator option.
- The Command Prompt window will now open.
- At the command prompt type: powercfg -H off.
- Close the Command Prompt.
Enable
If, after you have disabled hibernation you wish
to re-enable it, proceed as follows:
- Click Start followed by All Programs and
then Accessories.
- On the Accessories menu Right Click on the
Command Prompt.
- From the drop down menu, Click on the Run As
Administrator option.
- The Command Prompt window will now open. At
the command prompt type: powercfg -H on.
- Close the Command Prompt.
An alternative way of Disabling and Enabling
hibernation is through the Power Options facility in
Control Panel. To do this proceed as follows:
Disable
- Click the Start button.
- On the Start Menu, Click Control Panel.
- In the Control Panel windows, Click the
Power Options icon.
- In the Select a Power Plan window, Click on
the Change Plan Settings link.
- In the Change Setting For Power Plan window,
Click on the Change Advanced Power Plan link.
- In the Advanced Settings window, Click on
the Plus (+) sign next to the Sleep option to
expand the list.
- Next Click on the plus (+) sign next to the
Hibernate option and change the setting to
Never.
- You change the setting by clicking on the
down arrow to the right of the Setting (Minutes)
option.
- Next, Click on the plus sign (+) next to the
Allow Hybrid sleep option and set this to Off.
- Finally, Click the OK button.
Enable
- Click the Start Button.
- On the Start Menu, Click Control Panel.
- In the Control Panel windows, Click the
Power Options icon.
- In the Select a Power Plan window, Click on
the Change Plan Settings link.
- In the Change Setting For Power Plan window,
Click on the Change Advanced Power Plan link.
- In the Advanced Settings window, Click on
the Plus (+) sign next to the Sleep option to
expand the list.
- Next Click on the plus (+) sign next to the
Hibernate option and set the setting (Minutes)
to whatever period of time you want before your
computer goes into hibernation.
- Next, Click on the plus sign (+) next to the
Allow Hybrid sleep option and set this to On.
- Finally, Click the OK button.
