57. Change The Registered Owner Name In Windows

Sometimes when you purchase a PC that comes with
XP pre-installed the actually copy of XP (usually on
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) copy may be
registered to the company that build the PC. To
change the registration details do the following.
NOTE
Before proceeding to edit the Registry be sure to
make a backup copy.
1/ Click the Start Button.
2/ From the Start menu click
Run.
3/ In the Run dialog box type:
regedit
4/ The Registry editor will now open.
5/ Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current
Version
6/ Once you have reached the Current
Version key take a look in the
Right Hand Pane and look for
Registered Owner.
7/ Right click the Registered Owner
key to edit it.
8/ To edit the key Right click the entry and
select Modify.
9/ At the same time you might also like to change
the Registered organisation. This
option is situated just above the registered owner
option.
10/ To edit the key Right Click the entry and
select Modify.
Important Note
While the above will change the name and details
of the Registered owner of the computer you may
still see instances of the previous owner in Windows
Explorer under the User section, i.e. Documents etc.
If this is the case then you will need to
Create a new User Profile (User Account)
for yourself (see
90. Create New User Profile )
Once you have created a new User Account for
yourself you can the Delete the User Account
that belonged to the previous owner (see
91. Delete A User Account )
